Rep. James E. Clyburn (D-S.C.) is swatting away arguments that President Biden should step down from the Democratic ticket after his subpar debate performance Thursday evening, contending that the incumbent should “stay the course.”
Clyburn — who is widely considered responsible for Biden’s crucial primary victory in South Carolina that propelled him to the nomination in 2020 — said he thought Biden had a “poor performance” at the debate, calling it “strike one.”
“If this were a ball game he’s got two more swings,” he added. But when asked about remarks from Democrats that the incumbent should step aside, the longtime House member urged the president to plow ahead.
“Stay the course,” Clyburn said when asked to respond to calls for Biden to leave the top of the ticket. “Chill out.” (The Hill)
Changing partners at the Presidential Ball?
Precedent?
As historian Heather Cox Richardson wrote, 1968 was the last election until 1988 in which the incumbent president was not on the ballot. It threw the race into utter confusion and the president’s party and Johnson’s Vice President Hubert Humphrey lost.
Your Daily Reminder
Trump is a convicted felon.
On May 30th, he was found guilty on 34 felony counts by the unanimous vote of 12 ordinary citizens.
On Thursday, July 11, the Convicted Felon Donald J. Trump will be sentenced.
Biden: The only convicted criminal on that stage was Trump. When I thought about his 34 convictions, his sexual assault on a woman in a public place, his being fined for business fraud.. I thought to myself Trump is not just convicted felon, he’s a one man crime wave pic.twitter.com/8bkcadL68i
