Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision of the Supreme Court which ruled that the Constitution of the United States protected a woman’s right to have abortion, became the law of the land, this day 51 years ago.
50 years later, on June 24, 2022, in the case entitled Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, the Supreme Court overturned Roe, ruling that the right to abortion was not "deeply rooted in this Nation's history or tradition.”
Since Roe was overturned, both Republican legislators and the general electorate have made clear where they stand on abortion.
Republican state legislators have grown more and more aggressive in imposing restrictions on a women’s rights. Trump, Nikki Haley and other Republicans have promised to create national abortion bans.
Since Roe was overturned, voters have gone in the opposite direction.
There were 6 ballot measures addressing abortion in 2022 — the most on record for a single year.
Measures protecting a woman’s right to abortion were approved in California, Michigan, and Vermont, and measures challenging a woman’s right to abortion were defeated in Kansas, Kentucky, and Montana.
In 2023, Ohio voters approved Issue 1, provided a state constitutional right to "make and carry out one’s own reproductive decisions," including decisions about abortion, contraception, and other reproductive matters.
Since Roe was overturned, Vice President Harris has been the Administration’s foremost messenger on abortion rights. We can expect that to continue.

The President himself has made clear what we can expect from him when he is re-elected in 2024.
Yesterday, the Biden-Harris campaign released this 1 minute ad, entitled Forced, in support of a women’s right to abortion.
Today, think of Roe. Think of your right to control your own body.
Remember - Abortion rights will be front and center in the 2024 election.
Abortion rights will be on the ballot in 2024.
