4th of July 2025. 🇺🇸 Annette’s Roundup for Democracy.
On this, the saddest 4th of July in the history of our country, I invite you to consider spending part of the holiday weekend watching Heidi Schreck’s performance of “What the Constitution Means to Me” on Amazon Prime Video.
This is a filmed version of the 2019 104 minute Broadway production.
The Broadway Production of Heidi Schreck’s What the Constitution Means to Me.
Or if you haven’t the time or inclination to watch the production (or support Amazon), here is the trailer to give you the flavor of the play and the issues it raises.
I hope you find even the sample of the play offers consolation - after what happened this past week by the would-be dictator in the White House, and those in the Congress and on the Supreme Court, who enable him.
Think of a more remarkable time when we as a nation aspired to, or will aspire to, meet and exceed the ideals of the Constitution.
As Heidi Schreck reminds us -
“The Constitution is a living document. That is what is so beautiful about it. It is a living, warm-blooded, steamy document. It is hot and sweaty. It is a crucible.”
“A crucible is a boiling pot. That is one definition. But a crucible—it’s also a severe test, a test of patience or belief. Our Constitution can be thought of as a boiling pot in which we are thrown together in sizzling and steamy conflict to find out what it is we truly believe.”
“Our Constitution acknowledges who we are now might not be who we will become.”
And as Gloria Steinem told us, “The revolution is not one-time event.”
Nor was The Revolution.
See you after the weekend. Tuesday.
As ever, I hope your days are Trump-less. Someday, if we fight day after day, they will be.
