Rustic n' Rainy

Second to last wedding of the year and it was in a tiny little rustic venue and it rained the entire day. Big recipe for photographer stress. I definitely whined about this plenty last week but rustic venues/barns are great for ambiance, bad for photography. I spent a lot of this wedding day in frantic, problem-solving mode. There was no indoor space big enough for group photos, nothing uncluttered enough for portraits of the couple. The solution to this is to pull out a classic wedding photographer trick - THE BACKLIT RAIN PORTRAIT. Every wedding photographer should have this in their repertoire. I'll show examples in a second. First the prep and the ceremony.

We did some rainy portraits right after the ceremony.

Then the reception, and it just got darker and darker.

Then came time for the serious portraits. I hyped these guys up all night that their rain portraits would be epic and I think I delivered!

Then I broke out my flash for the dance floor knowing that I would have to go nuts with editing to get the colors looking normal. Bouncing flash off of wood (with the shortest ceilings of any venue I've ever shot at) makes the colors all weird.

Kudos to this guest for the masterful spoon-twerk

Then I finished up the weekend with a couple of engagement sessions. I only have one wedding left this year but I'm doubled up on engagement shoots every other weekend for the next month.

Weather-permitting I'll be heading to Vermont on Sunday for a shoot and I hope that trip is fun!
