Burnout, Trolls, and Good Light
I have to admit that I've been feeling a little bit of burnout lately. Lots of shoots, lots of travel. I'm feeling tired, uninspired, clumsy, forgetful. I guess this is pretty normal. Last year around this time I gave myself a week off and hung out in Cape Cod doing a workshop and hanging out at the beach.
I'm filling in this space with some underwhelming shots I took on a new film camera I've been testing. I'll get to some of the real shoots I did this week. I just needed to gripe a little bit about burnout. I haven't even been shooting many weddings this month. Only 4. Instead it's been a ton of engagement shoots for couples getting married next year.
I had a chance to head out to The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens to do an engagement shoot with some flowers and the CMBG's very popular troll sculptures.
I also did a session at Bug Light in Portland, with a little stop at Crescent Beach State Park. The Highlight of that shoot was hanging out with a cool bulldog.
By Wednesday I was in a pretty bad mood, feeling very tired and overworked. The shoots I had done all week were fun, the clients were cool but it was exhausting and challenging because the sessions were a little bit earlier in the day, with challenging lighting situations. I wasn't looking forward to Wednesday's shoot but luckily I had chosen Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth, one of my favorite spots, and a spot that typically has a bit og a coastal haze to it, making the light a little bit softer and easier to work with.
Apparently that easy light was all I needed to feel better. I got through the shoot easily and left feeling much more energized than I had in a while. Funny what a little bit of good light can do for a photographer.
If you think I sound tired now just wait for next week. Tomorrow I head out to Peaks Island and Monday I have a wedding up in Caratunk, Maine (I had to google it too) up in MOOSE ALLEY, close to Canada. Should be an adventure. I legit do not want to see any moose. They can just keep to themselves.
Closing out this week with more random film shots.
