Books, Beauty, and Bean

If you’re at all human I’m sure you’ve been aghast at what is happening in the world. I know I have been. So if you’re not up for reading anything I get it! I wasn’t up for writing much, to be honest. But I figured you may need some retail therapy in the book and beauty department.

You may wonder why I talk books and beauty (and Bean!) but those are my hobbies/interests. If you’re in text chat with me you get alllll the good info already.

Let’s get to it.

Books!

First, it’s spooky season! So what am I reading? Besides a book on Khthonic gods (A handbook, really. I contain multitudes) I’m diving into Hailey Piper’s A Light Most Hateful. Hailey is one of the star voices in horror, is a fantastic human, and I love everything she does. If you want to get scared, definitely read her. The description of this book alone should do it for you: “Mona Awad’s Bunny meets Stranger Things when a summer storm sweeps through a sleepy town, unleashing a monstrous power that threatens to bend reality, from the Bram Stoker award winning author of Queen of Teeth.”

A Light Most Hateful available at Amazon and Bookshop.org and your local store!

In case you missed it, Publishers Weekly did a piece on true crime showing up in thrillers and included Almost Surely Dead! There are some excellent novels coming out that tackle true crime and its impact on us all. Highly recommend snapping up some of these books especially Kellye Garrett’s Missing White Woman. (It’s so good, out in April, pre-order!) And mine. Buy mine. I need to buy Bean more toys. New Thrillers About True Crime

Beauty!

Last newsletter I raved about Skinceuticals but hated the price tag. So I dug through reddit to find dupes that would work without making me broke. Who says being servicey doesn’t work?

First up was the much raved about Skin Fix Barrier Cream. People love this one. I am not one of them. It didn’t do anything for me, my skin felt dry and I had to reapply throughout the day. Bummer because it’s a third of the price of Skinceuticals and it’s at Sephora and maybe their sale is starting soon. (I saw that it’s kicking off this weekend but there’s not been a lot of mentions about it so I have no idea.)

My advice is to test it out in stores if you can.

Dieux Skin cream

The other moisturizer I tried is Dieux Skin, which if you’re on instagram you’ve probably been buried in ads for it. The Instant Angel is thick, it’s hydrating, and it does last all day for me. And it’s only $45-$78 depending on the size. I’ve already bought more because l’m a firm believer in you can never moisturize enough. Seriously, can’t say enough good things about this one. I’m also in the midst of clearing covid acne (did you know covid can give you zits?) so my skin is extra dry right now. I love Skinceuticals, but Dieux Skin is the winner here.

Now, if the Sephora sale is indeed kicking off soon, I’ll holler with goodies to buy. (I mainly stock up like a beauty hoarder and I regret none of it!).

Bean!

The reason you’re even here. Bean got a new toy this week and she loves Mr. Ducky very much.
