One day more!
Well.
Here we are.
Tomorrow is Election Day in the United States, which in this case simply means the last day to vote. If you can vote, I hope you have. If you haven’t, I hope you will.
It’s possible we’ll know the likely result by as early as tomorrow night, and also possible we won’t.
It’s also possible that the official result will be ignored or contested by the incumbent, who is literally fortifying the White House with an “un-scalable fence” not just around the grounds proper but around the public Lafayette Square, a popular staging ground for popular demonstrations. If that doesn’t signal ill-intent, I don’t know what does.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that nothing ends tomorrow, but things are likely to change. No one can say how — or how bad — but we can all see the change coming, all feel it.
So my words of advice are:
Take care of yourself. We’re going to need you. Remember the air mask principle: you can’t help others if you can’t breathe yourself.
Be excellent to one another. We’re going to need each other.
Don’t give in to despair. If change were impossible they wouldn’t be fighting so hard against it.
Pay only as much attention to the returns and analysis tomorrow as you personally need to. There’s not going to be a single clear moment that requires all hands to immediately be on deck for from sea to shining sea; if a time comes for action, it won’t come and go in an instant, I promise.
Projections are moving in Biden’s favor even today but it’s not over until it’s over and the more we run up the score, the harder it will be for anyone to skew the results. Please stay in it to win it until the show’s over. If you’re textbanking and phonebanking, please keep at it. If you haven’t been… maybe now’s your time to step up?
Anyway. If you’re reading this, that means you made it. You’ve survived four years. Not everyone did, and not everyone will survive another four. But we — you and I — have made it, together, and that’s not a bad thing.
There’s a hard winter coming, a long, dark one, and the only way any of us are going to get through it is together. The good news is that’s what human beings do best.
