Episode 56: 1971 with Alexandra Heller-Nicholas
A podcast about the great movie years.
This week, film critic, author, Fangoria columnist, physical media mainstay, and recovering academic Alexandra Heller-Nicholas joins us for a jaunt through the dark laughs of Little Murders and A New Leaf, the knotty gender politics of Straw Dogs, and more of the disturbances and pleasures of 1971.
Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Overcast, Google Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Little Murders is streaming on the Criterion Channel, or you can pick up that Indicator Blu-ray here. A New Leaf is streaming on PlutoTV and is available for digital rental or purchase.
Straw Dogs is not currently streaming anywhere (what the fuck), but there is an excellent Criterion Blu-ray. The Abominable Dr Phibes is ALSO not currently streaming anywhere (WHAT the FUCK) but KL Studio Classics recently put out a great Blu-ray of it and its sequel from the following year.
Wake in Fright is streaming on Kanopy and Plex, and is available for digital rental or purchase. And Walkabout is streaming on the Criterion Channel; Criterion also recently put out a first-rate 4K Blu-ray.
Oh, and here’s that quad Straw Dogs poster Alexandra mentioned:
You can buy Alexandra’s book Rape-Revenge Films: A Critical Study here, or 1000 Women In Horror, 1895-2018 here, or ReFocus: The Films of Elaine May here, OR any of her other books here. And if you’d like to hear our first 1971 episode, with guest Charles Bramesco, you can do that here.
