And, we're back (on a delay)!

A view of the Mountain of Anubis and the enclosure of Senwosret III

Hi everyone! As some of you may know, I made it back to Abydos on the 30th of June and started buckling down to finish a handful of dissertation requirements in the short time I have here. Because I’m on a brief schedule, I am not taking Fridays off, which has left me little time to write up this newsletter.

You can imagine my awe when I realized these were 3000 year old dates!

Do not fear though! I am taking plenty of photos and notes to add to the next installment and will provide you with 3-4 weeks of newsletters likely beginning towards the end of July (this includes a peek inside a closed-to-the-public royal tomb that extends under a mountain and down 45 meters [!]). Our osteologist has also been working hard on our bones, which means I’ll be able to provide you all with some interesting insights into the people we have excavated as well.

A doorway to the 5000 year old Shunet el Zebib [hopefully some of you will visit this in person next week - you know who you are]

Abydos is beautiful, as always, and it’s really nice to be back with some members of my team and the UPenn team (it’s a lot of laughing and shockingly idiotic conversations). We’ve had some rough days (which I will address later), but it’s turning out to be a very successful study season. The only thing I ask of you all as you wait for the next installment is to send us cooling thoughts - this week will be hitting 115 degrees and, as you all know, we have no AC… Malesh, such is dig life!

Talk soon!

The dig house has a few new murals, I like this guy’s sassiness
