Welcome to Real Future (née 5IT)

tinyletter_aniletter
Standby for a real, actual (tiny)letter! I have some good news.

When I left The Atlantic to go to Fusion last year, I said that I wanted a place to explore the futurey vibes of this newsletter in new ways. Well, today, the expedition set off for parts unknown. We launched Real Future, a renegade Silicon Valley bureau exploring the worlds we'll live in, on a redesigned Fusion.net. You can read the whole manifesto here, but this is the key thing: If the mission of Fusion is to champion a more diverse, inclusive America, our mission is to champion a more diverse, inclusive future. The stories at ᴙғ will range widely, bringing unconventional ideas and perspectives to bear on our understanding of how the world is changing. Soon, our live events will begin, and then the TV show will debut in the fall. I'm really, really happy about all of it.

In many ways, this newsletter pushed me onto the path I find myself walking. Creating this newsletter on a whim, giving it this sort of silly name, 5 Intriguing Things, and watching the community grow has been one of the most gratifying mediamaking experiences of my life. When I write the newsletter, I feel like I'm sending it out to individual human beings, not launching it into the algorithmic depths and hoping to find this abstract thing called traffic.

5IT, though, as a name or a brand or whatever, never felt right to me. I will admit that I literally made up the brand as I was sending out the first newsletter. So, when we settled on the name Real Future for our work at Fusion, I decided that I wanted to bring the newsletter into its forever home within ᴙғ. And now I have. You're no longer reading 5IT but the Real Future newsletter. The archive has moved here: http://www.tinyletter.com/realfuture/.

DON'T WORRY: THE CONTENT OF THE NEWSLETTER WON'T CHANGE. I love this format! And you've trusted me with access to your inbox. I am grateful and I will not abuse that trust. The only structural change you will see is that under the five links, down by our word of the day, I'm going to list headlines of Real Future stories that you might find intriguing (sniff). Given that our editorial mission grew out of this newsletter, I think you're going to like what you see. IF, however, you find this annoying, do let know. I'm really open to feedback about these changes.

I'll be sending out the first edition of the renamed newsletter in a separate email shortly. Thank you. And don't forget to send me links. I remain,

Yours,

Alexis

P.S. Also, now that I've brought the newsletter inside Fusion, I can have our awesome product team take a look at how to make all the little mods and improvements that you all have asked for.
