[31 Days of Halloween] October 11

A spellbinding visit to the real-life Halloweentown and a dive into vintage Halloween ads

Good evening lil pumpkins,

From the cartoon Peanuts, Linus carries a sign reading "Welcome Great Pumpkin" through a pumpkin patch

Busy day today! We drove out to St. Helens, Oregon, or as it’s better known…Halloweentown. (It’s the place where they filmed the beloved Disney movie of the same name, and how home to a Halloween-themed festival).

It was very cozy, small-town vibes, although it was pretty bustling all day. The weather was also kind to us. All in all, a fun day out!

Bats on a Japanese matchbox cover, c. 1900. “Bat” (蝠) is pronounced the same (fú) as “Good Luck” (福)

This is a fun look at Halloween ads of the past, starting in the 1920s. It traces the evolution of ad style as well as cultural approaches to Halloween over the years. (This would make such an interesting book!!)

I admit I’ve gotten into a bit of a deep dive on this topic — if you want to read more, this is an interesting blog post about vintage alcohol Halloween ads, and here’s one about candy in the 40s and 50s.

An illustration showing the headless horseman outside of a window. His head is on a table next to a lit candle and a bowl of M&Ms candy.
M&Ms in 2007 lookin’ like a young adult horror novel book cover (one which I would definitely have stood in line for at the Scholastic Book Fair)

I need to spend some time this weekend catching up on all of the lovely emails you’ve been sending me, so look forward to some fun new art and links coming up soon! And please, keep sending them my way.

Pumpkinly yours,
Laura
