10 Spiciest Takes on Venezuela’s Quakes

Everyone saw the photos, no one agrees on what broke first, the buildings or the politics.

Two massive quakes just ripped through Venezuela, collapsing buildings in Caracas, killing dozens, injuring hundreds, and leaving rescue crews digging through pancaked concrete. The images are brutal, and the arguments online are somehow worse. Everyone has the same footage and completely different villains.

Here is the fight, from gently toasted to instantly cancelable.

  1. Mild: The tragedy is bad enough without turning it into your favorite talking point within 6 hours. You can wait a day before using dead Venezuelans as content fuel.

  2. Mild-Plus: Decade-old infrastructure and corruption mattered more than the magnitude on the Richter scale. The earth shook, but it is the missing building codes and siphoned budgets that turned this into a mass casualty event.

  3. Warm: If your first instinct was “content,” not “donate,” you are part of the problem. You do not need to go live on Instagram from a pile of rubble to prove you care.

  4. Spicy: Oil money built palaces for politicians and left regular people in concrete Jenga towers with no chance. Venezuela was rich enough to earthquake-proof a generation ago, it just chose yachts and patronage instead.

  5. Hot: Foreign governments using this disaster as a soft-power photo op are disaster tourists with better PR teams. Planeloads of flags and camera crews arrived faster than long term rebuilding plans.

  6. Extra Hot: Sanctions plus authoritarian mismanagement is the perfect combo for “natural” disasters that were never going to stay natural. When a state is already broken, every shock, economic or tectonic, becomes a body count multiplier.

  7. Glowing Hot: If you only discovered Venezuelans exist when their homes collapsed, you are not “raising awareness,” you are late to your own empathy. The country has been in slow motion collapse for years, the quake just made it photogenic.

  8. Inferno: Climate discourse is so vibes-based now that people are blaming earthquakes on global warming instead of plate tectonics or bad governance. Not every catastrophe is a carbon morality play, sometimes it is just physics plus corruption.

  9. Catastrophic: This is what “resilience” actually looks like, people clawing through rubble while elites tweet platitudes from untouched neighborhoods. The poor absorb the impact, the rich curate their concern, and everyone else argues about geopolitics from the couch.

  10. Nuclear: Calling it a natural disaster is propaganda, the shaking was natural, the mass death was manufactured. If safe buildings were a priority, this would be a terrifying night, not a national trauma.
