6. Searing: The real military innovation here is turning taxpayers into involuntary war sponsors. Bombs, repairs, deployments, aid, and reconstruction do not pay for themselves, and neither do the funerals.

7. Scorching: Every defender of this war talks like civilian deaths are an unfortunate typo. They are not a typo, they are the main event in any honest reading of the reports.

8. Inferno: This is what happens when “deterrence” becomes a marketing word for collective punishment. The language stays clean while the casualty numbers get filthy.
