10 Spiciest Takes on Europe's Iran War Dilemma

Trump wants Europe to fight his war. Europe wants energy prices to drop. Nobody's getting what they want.

Trump is threatening Europe to join the US-Israel military campaign against Iran, but European leaders are stuck between a rock and a hard place. If they send troops, their voters will revolt. If they don't, energy prices stay crushed and Iran keeps blocking the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Trump is calling them cowards and saying America doesn't need them anyway. It's the geopolitical equivalent of being asked to pay for a dinner you didn't order at a restaurant you didn't want to go to.

  1. Mild: Europe should at least pretend to care what America wants. They're acting like the US-Israel war is happening on another planet. A little diplomatic theater wouldn't kill them.

  2. Warm: Trump's NATO rebuke was actually justified, even if his tone sucked. If Europe wants to be a serious alliance partner, they can't just sit out every conflict and complain about gas prices. Pick a lane.

  3. Warm: Iran blocking the Strait of Hormuz is economic terrorism and Europe knows it. They're acting concerned about energy prices while refusing to do anything about the country literally choking off global oil supplies. The hypocrisy is spectacular.

  4. Glowing Hot: Europe is using the energy crisis as an excuse to avoid making a hard choice. They could join the war effort, they just don't want to. Blaming high prices lets them feel virtuous while doing nothing.

  5. Glowing Hot: Trump was right to ditch NATO allies and pivot to the Indo-Pacific anyway. If Europe won't fight, why should America keep bankrolling their security? Pivot complete.

  6. Nuclear: European leaders are betting Iran wins because they know America will eventually leave. They're refusing to commit because they think this ends badly for the US, and they don't want to be on the losing side. It's cowardice dressed up as principle.

  7. Nuclear: The real issue is that Europe never wanted to be a military power and now they're paying the price. You can't freeload on American security for 80 years and then act shocked when America asks for help. This is the bill coming due.

  8. Nuclear: France's "we'll help after the fighting stops" line is the most pathetic cop-out in diplomatic history. They're saying they'll secure shipping lanes after the threat is gone. That's not help, that's showing up to the party after everyone leaves.

  9. Nuclear: Europe's energy crisis is self-inflicted and they're mad America won't fix it for them. They rejected American military action, so now they get to deal with Iranian economic warfare alone. This is what you get for being neutral in a real conflict.

  10. Nuclear: The US should let Europe's economy collapse and then act shocked when they finally ask for help. Maybe a real recession will teach them that there's no such thing as a free lunch in geopolitics. Sometimes you have to fight for what you want.
